ParaView

ParaView is an open-source application for interactive scientific visualization with client-server support for remote rendering of large datasets.

Loading the module

module load ParaView/5.11.2-foss-2023a

To see all installed versions across clusters, check the software catalog or run module spider ParaView.

Version matching

Your local ParaView client must match the major.minor version running on the cluster. Download matching binaries from paraview.org/download.

Remote visualization with pvserver

The recommended workflow is to run pvserver on a compute node and connect from your local ParaView client via SSH tunnel.

1. Start pvserver on a compute node:

srun -N1 --ntasks=4 --mem=32G --time=04:00:00 --qos=regular --pty bash
module load ParaView/5.11.2-foss-2023a
pvserver --force-offscreen-rendering

The output shows the connection URL:

Waiting for client...
Connection URL: cs://hyperion-215:11111
Accepting connection(s): hyperion-215:11111

2. Create an SSH tunnel from your local machine:

ssh -L 11111:hyperion-215:11111 username@hyperion.sw.ehu.es -N

Replace hyperion-215 with the actual compute node from step 1.

3. Connect your local ParaView to localhost:11111 via File > Connect.

Batch mode

For non-interactive post-processing with pvbatch:

paraview.slurm
#!/bin/bash
#SBATCH --qos=regular
#SBATCH --job-name=paraview
#SBATCH --nodes=1
#SBATCH --ntasks-per-node=4
#SBATCH --cpus-per-task=1
#SBATCH --mem=32G
#SBATCH --time=02:00:00
#SBATCH --output=%x.%j.out
#SBATCH --error=%x.%j.err

module load ParaView/5.11.2-foss-2023a

srun pvbatch my_pipeline.py
